To respond to a positive review, thank the customer by name, repeat one specific detail from what they wrote, add one useful piece of information, and sign with a real name. Two to four sentences is enough. Reply within a couple of days, change the wording every time, and keep promotions out of it. The 20 examples below cover the situations a Shopify store meets most often.
Thank, echo, add, sign. Thank the reviewer by name, echo a detail that proves a person read the review, add something useful such as a care tip, and sign with your first name. Keep it short and public-safe: no order details, no discount codes, no request to raise a rating. Future shoppers read the reply too, so a copy-pasted "Thanks for your review!" under every comment works against you.

Why reply to a review that is already positive
Many stores answer complaints and ignore compliments. That is half a strategy.
In the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US adults), 89% of consumers expect business owners to respond to reviews, and 80% say they are likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews. That drops to 45% for a business that only answers the positive ones and 47% for one that only answers the negative ones. Replying to both is what earns the trust.
There is also evidence that replying changes what happens next. A study of hotel reviews published in Marketing Science by Davide Proserpio and Georgios Zervas found a 0.12-star increase in ratings and a 12% increase in review volume for hotels that responded to their reviews. Hotels are not Shopify stores, so treat the size of the effect with caution. The direction is the useful part.
The platforms say the same thing in plainer words. Google's tips for improving local ranking list replying to reviews as a way to show customers that you value their feedback, and Trustpilot's guidelines for businesses encourage companies to reply in order to give thanks and build trust.
One more reason is specific to ecommerce: a public reply is read by the next shopper, not only by the reviewer.
The four-part formula
Every example in this guide follows the same structure.
| Part | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Thank by name | Shows the reply is addressed to a person | Thank you, Maya. |
| 2. Echo one detail | Proves someone read the review | Glad the medium fits over a sweater as you hoped. |
| 3. Add something useful | Gives future readers a reason to read the reply | A cold wash keeps the color for longer. |
| 4. Sign with a name | Makes the store feel like a team of people | Lena, customer care |
Two rules from Google's own tips for writing review replies shape the rest. First, keep replies short and simple, because long ones do not get read. Second, be conversational and not promotional: reviewers are already customers, so a reply is the wrong place for an offer.
The same page makes a point that most guides skip. Instead of posting the same thank-you under every review, Google suggests focusing on reviews where you can share an update or answer a question. In practice: reply to everyone if you can say something specific each time, and start with the detailed reviews if you cannot. In the BrightLocal survey, templated or generic responses make 50% of consumers unlikely to choose a business.

Where to reply, platform by platform
| Platform | Where the reply is written | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Business Profile, then Read reviews, then Reply | Public, posted under the business name, and the reviewer is notified |
| Trustpilot | Your Trustpilot business account, after claiming the profile | Public, shown under the review on your profile page |
| Shop app | Shopify admin, Sales channels, Shop, Reviews | Up to 1,000 characters, and the reviewer gets a push notification |
| Product review app | The app's reviews dashboard | Usually a choice between a public reply in the widget and a private email |
Google. Google's guide to managing customer reviews gives the steps: go to your Business Profile, select Read reviews, select Reply next to the review, write and submit. Your business has to be verified first. Google checks each reply against its content policies before it is published, which usually takes up to 10 minutes and can take up to 30 days. For the negative side and for local SEO, see our full guide to responding to Google reviews.

Trustpilot. Claiming your business profile is free and gives you the ability to reply to reviews, according to Trustpilot's guidelines for businesses. Trustpilot's own advice for its free plan notes that many profiles with Excellent TrustScores reply in less than two days.
Shop app. Shopify documents the steps in Manage your Shop product reviews: from your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Shop, click Reviews, click the review, type your reply in the Reply to this review field and click Send reply. The reply may be screened before it is published. If the customer later edits or deletes the review, your reply is unpublished and you can answer the new version.
Product review apps. Most apps let you answer from the list of reviews. In Judge.me, for example, the Reply button offers a public reply shown beneath the review in the widget or a private reply by email, and its help article lists the public reply as available on the Free plan. Use the public option for positive reviews: the point is for the next shopper to see it.
What to keep out of a public reply
- Offers and discount codes. Google advises against using a reply to promote deals. A coupon posted under a five-star review also looks like a reward for the rating, and Google prohibits offering incentives in exchange for reviews. Our guide on discounts for reviews explains where the line is.
- Private details. No order numbers, addresses, phone numbers or anything about what the customer bought beyond what they wrote themselves.
- A request to change the rating. Do not ask a four-star reviewer to move to five. Shopify's Shop review guidelines state that merchants should not incentivize a customer to change or remove a review.
- The same sentence every time. Half of consumers are put off by it.
- A wall of text. If the reply is longer than the review, cut it.
How fast to reply
In the BrightLocal survey, 19% of consumers expect a response to their review the same day, 32% by the following day, and 81% within a week. A workable target for a small team is two business days for positive reviews, and the same day for negative ones, which follow a different playbook: see how to respond to negative reviews.
A simple routine that holds up:
- Turn on email notifications for new reviews on every platform you use.
- Block 15 minutes twice a week for replies.
- Answer the detailed reviews first, the rating-only ones last.
- Keep your own versions of the examples above, and never use the same one twice in a row.
Get more out of a positive review than a reply
- Share it. Google lets you copy a direct link to any review from the Share review option in Google Maps.
- Reuse it in your marketing, with permission. Our testimonial advertising examples show how stores turn reviews into ads and product-page copy.
- Learn from it. The words customers use in five-star reviews are the words your product page should use. See our product review examples.
- Ask for the next one. Replies are only possible when reviews exist. If you are getting fewer than you would like, start with the templates in how to ask customers for reviews, and build a direct link with the Google review link generator or the Trustpilot review URL generator so customers land on the form in one tap.
That last point is the one Reviewz automates. It is a Shopify app that asks every customer for a review after an order over WhatsApp, SMS and email. Customers who rate 4 or 5 stars are sent to Trustpilot, Google or Judge.me, and the others get a private feedback form, so an unhappy customer reaches your team directly. Check each platform's invitation rules before you choose where to send people. It is free to start, with paid plans on the pricing page.

FAQ
How do you respond to a positive review?
Thank the customer by name, mention one specific detail from their review, add one useful piece of information and sign with a real name. Two to four sentences is enough. For example: "Thank you, Maya. Glad the medium fits over a sweater as you hoped. A cold wash keeps the color for longer. Lena, customer care."
Should you respond to every positive review?
Aim to, as long as each reply says something specific. Consumers favor businesses that answer all their reviews, but generic replies put half of them off. If time is short, answer the detailed reviews first.
What do you say to a five-star review with no comment?
Keep it to one or two sentences: thank the customer by name, mention the product and offer help if they ever need it. Rotate between several short versions so the same line does not appear under every rating.
Can I offer a discount in my reply to a positive review?
It is better not to. Google advises against promotional replies and prohibits incentives in exchange for reviews, and a public coupon under a five-star review reads like a reward for the rating. Send offers through your normal marketing channels.
How quickly should I reply to a positive review?
Within two business days is a good target. In the BrightLocal 2026 survey, 81% of consumers expect a response within a week and 19% expect one the same day.
Can I use AI to write review responses?
As a first draft, yes. Edit every reply so it contains a detail from the actual review, because templated or generic responses make 50% of consumers unlikely to choose a business.
